Landon School Barton Alumni Athletic Center
Bethesda, Maryland
As one of the top independent schools in the metropolitan Washington, DC area, Landon School has built a significant reputation for academic and athletic excellence. However, despite winning numerous championships in all sports during its 80 year history, Landon's athletic facilities were in need of significant improvement. The old athletic complex consisted of two gymnasiums built in 1939 and 1981 with primitive locker facilities on the floor below.
The primary design goals were to not only upgrade the facilities but to celebrate the history of athletics at Landon School and to provide clear wayfinding in the complex. To achieve these goals, the entire structure connecting the two gyms was removed down to the first floor slab. A new light-filled atrium now serves as the primary gathering area for students, parents and alumni during athletic events and throughout each day.
The renovated Barton Alumni Athletic Center has become the new focal point for the school in proper celebration of a fine athletic tradition.
